October 29, 2021 @ 7:30 am - 8:30 am PDT

Around the World

Often, patients, clinicians, and legal experts are not on the same page when patient harm occurs. This lack of a coordinated effort toward resolution can compromise healing and improvement for all groups involved. While we have a good understanding of what’s not working well, such as a culture of silence after an error occurs, the panelists will discuss actionable, interdisciplinary solutions to improve these well known gaps.

Facilitator:

  • Sarah Miller, MS, Director of Partnerships for the Patient Safety Movement Foundation

Moderator:

  • Luis Torres, MD, MBA, Physician and Quality Specialist, Hospital Espanol

Panelists:

  • Collin May, J.D., D.E.A., M.T.S., B.A., Patient Advocate, Senior Counsel, Barrister & Solicitor (Alberta), Commissioner, Alberta Human Rights Commission and Tribunal, DD West LLP
  • Elizabeth A. Kaveny, J.D, Managing Partner/Senior Trial Attorney, Kaveny & Kroll, LLC
  • Regina Holliday, Patient Rights Activist, Founder, The Walking Gallery

 Objectives:

  • Understand the different priorities and perspectives of patients, families, clinicians, administrators and attorneys when dealing with medical harm.
  • Recognize how medical errors have historically been handled and why there are such disparities in the way different roles typically respond.
  • Consider the impact the current methods of dealing with medical error has on patients, families, and others.
  • Discuss the expectations that patients and families should have of healthcare organizations in preventing harm before it occurs and how they can participate in keeping themselves safe.
  • Summarize the steps everyone can take to improve communication, transparency and respect for each other in dealing with harm when it occurs.

This webinar is approved for 1 CE credit. This CE satisfies the requirements for Board Certified Patient Advocates (BCPA).
