Katherine Kay
Katherine Kay is a Retired Registered Nurse and a patient of Kaiser Permanente. She worked in Maternal Child Health with Mercy Hospital from 1984 until she retired in 2007. In April of 2018, Katherine was diagnosed with Kidney Cancer. She underwent surgery for a Left Ureteronephrectomy at Kaiser Permanente in Sacramento on May 3rd. During her admission, she experienced post-operative pneumonia that without early recognition, could have resulted in life threatening clinical deterioration. Fortunately, Kaiser Permanente’s innovative Advance Alert Monitor system identified these early signs of deterioration with sufficient lead time to proactively intervene, preventing potential decline. Katherine was comforted and impressed by the safety net and caring attention she received. Today, Katherine is enjoying life to the fullest and is Cancer free. She volunteers 3 days a week at a local food bank where she and her friends hand out groceries to those less fortunate. She enjoys spending time with her 4 children, 11 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and her 9-year old Cocker Spaniel. She says “Yes” to spontaneous outings and can even be seen on the back of her daughter’s motorcycle or fishing in the Sacramento Delta. Katherine and her family are grateful for Kaiser Permanente’s focus on patient safety and for the care they received during this difficult time.
