Dr. William Wilson, MD, MA is the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at UCI Health. He is a clinical professor of anesthesiology, medicine and surgery. As the CMO, Dr. Wilson has led major improvement efforts in patient safety, quality and experience. He facilitates collaboration between physicians, nurses, and other stakeholders to enhance efficiencies and patient care outcomes.
Dr. Wilson is an internationally recognized clinician-scientist, author and innovator. In addition to standardizing and optimizing patient care at UCI Health, Dr. Wilson is leading efforts to expand the use of telemedicine as a tool to increase outreach to the communities we serve, and to improve the quality and safety of our health care delivery system.
Dr. Wilson was initially recruited to UCI Health in 2013 to serve as the director of critical care services. After performing superbly in this role for approximately three years, Dr. Wilson was invited to serve as the interim CMO; and, eventually as the permanent CMO of UCI Health System.
Prior to coming to UCI Health, Dr. Wilson was vice chairman of the department of anesthesiology and chief of critical care medicine at UC San Diego Health System. During his 20-year tenure there, Dr. Wilson served as co-director of the trauma/surgical intensive care unit, and also performed adult and pediatric cardiac anesthesia. Under his leadership and direction, four new critical care services were created and became operational at UC San Diego.
Dr. Wilson is an innovative thinker and champion of multidisciplinary care. His diverse background includes formal training in surgery, anesthesiology, adult and pediatric cardiothoracic anesthesia and critical care medicine. Dr. Wilson has served as editor-in-chief of four major textbooks and has authored or edited hundreds of chapters, review articles and scientific papers. He continues to be invited to speak around the world on a wide range of topics including patient safety and quality, critical care, telemedicine, amongst others.
Dr. Wilson received his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, He received surgical training, and completed a fellowship in critical care medicine at UC San Francisco and completed a residency in anesthesiology at UC San Diego.
