Dr. Cox is a medical graduate of the University of Cape Town in South Africa, where he trained in paediatrics before changing his career path to Anaesthesia which he completed in the United Kingdom. He received his Critical Care training at the Hospital for Sick Children Toronto, Canada and at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, UK. Dr. Cox was appointed as a Staff Physician in the Department of Critical Care Medicine at The Hospital for Sick Children in 1989, and was recognized as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1990.
In addition to his clinical and administrative responsibilities, his research interests have focused primarily on pulmonary physiology and nosocomial infection in critically ill patients. Ongoing areas of interest are optimizing quality of care delivery, communication between teams and mitigating risk in care environments.
He is regularly an invited speaker to universities and hospitals at both a national and international level.
Administrative responsibilities have included President of the Medical Staff Association and President of the Paediatric Specialties Association at the Hospital for Sick Children.
