Annegret F. Hannawa, Ph.D. is tenured Associate Professor of Health Communication at the Università della Svizzera italiana, where she directs the Center for the Advancement of Healthcare Quality & Patient Safety (CAHQS). She also serves as Associate Faculty at the Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public Health and as Honorary Research Associate at Cardiff University’s School of Medicine (UK). Prof. Hannawa founded and presides the ISCOME Global Institute for the Advancement of Communication Science in Healthcare, which enables interdisciplinary research collaborations between leading scholars in communication science and healthcare to enhance safe practice across the globe. Prof. Hannawa’s research focuses on the role of interpersonal communication in optimizing the safety & quality of care. Her research has been published in a variety of distinguished journals and recognized with numerous international awards. Most recently, she received the Jozien Bensing Research Award (2016) for outstanding career achievements and impact. Her book “Communication Competence” received a competitive “Book-of-the-Year” award by the National Communication Association (NCA). Several of her empirical investigations received “Top Paper Awards” by the NCA and the Swiss Patient Safety Foundation. In 2017, she published the case studies book “New horizons for Patient Safety: Understanding Communication” to translate her “SACCIA Safe Communication” competencies for medicine & nursing.

Dr. Greiner is a leader in academic nursing and community-based participatory research. His background in public health nursing and community engagement provide a strong basis for his current work as PI on a federally funded geriatrics workforce enhancement project in San Diego, CA. This project uses a public health/partnership model to enhance geriatric education related to Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders for primary care providers and caregivers throughout the county. Dr. Greiner’s interest in patient safety stems from his involvement in state and national organizations for improving nursing and interprofessional education. Dr. Greiner received a BSN, MSN in Community Health, and a DNSc from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. He completed two post-doctoral studies and two fellowships.

Dean Jordan was recruited by Chapman University, to found the School of Pharmacy at its new multidisciplinary Health Sciences Campus in Irvine, California in February of 2013. Dean Jordan previously served as dean of the College of Pharmacy at the University of Rhode Island (URI) and as executive secretary of the Rhode Island State Crime Lab Commission since 2007. At URI, he oversaw completion of construction on his college’s $75 million research and teaching facility. During his tenure at URI, enrollment in the pharmacy program increased 45 percent. The URI College of Pharmacy ranked among the top research-oriented colleges of pharmacy in the U.S., with federally funded research exceeding a five-year average of nearly $9 million per year, a one-third period-to- period increase. He is registered pharmacist and Fellow of the American Pharmacists Association. Dean Jordan is a former President of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), the largest professional society of pharmacists in the world. Recently he was selected as a Dean Mentor for the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, Academic Leadership Fellows Program. Ron is an entrepreneur and pharmacy leader with business development and health informatics expertise. He founded businesses in hospice and pain management pharmacy, health benefit management software and integrated health systems informatics consulting. He was also a senior executive at companies offering an internet consumer prescription marketplace, pharmaceutical product supply chain transformation and health benefit insurance for 10 years. He earned his BS Pharmacy at URI and studied three years in a Doctoral program in pharmaceutics. His a member of the Board of Directors and Finance Committee of the Rhode Island Free Clinic and on the Board of Advisors for FSAStore Inc., and CareKinesis, a medication management company.

 

Dr. Scheinman is an internist and nephrologist who has earned international prominence for his research into the genetics of inherited kidney diseases and kidney stones.  He has published more than 90 peer-reviewed articles, reviews, and book chapters on topics related to kidney disease and genetics. For most of his career he was principal investigator on grants funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), American Heart Association (AHA) and other agencies. He has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international meetings and a visiting professor at many prominent universities across the United States and abroad.

Dr. Scheinman has served on review boards for the NIH, American Heart Association, American Society of Nephrology, American Federation for Clinical/Medical Research, and National Kidney Foundation, among others. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the American Society of Nephrology, and is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation.

Dr. Scheinman is an advocate on healthcare workforce issues and matters affecting medical schools.  He was a gubernatorial appointee to the New York State Council on Graduate Medical Education, and has served on a number of advisory boards to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and national boards related to medical education. He currently serves on the board of the National Resident Match Program and is chair-elect of that board.

Dr. Scheinman holds an A.B., summa cum laude, from Amherst College and received his medical degree with honors from Yale University. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital; was chief resident in internal medicine at Upstate; and completed fellowships in nephrology at Upstate Medical Center and Yale-New Haven Hospital.  He was formerly professor of medicine and pharmacology at SUNY Upstate Medical University, where he served for eight years as senior vice president and dean of the College of Medicine.

Dr Mike Durkin, MBBS, FRCA, DSc (Hon) is the Chairman of the Patient Safety Movement Foundation’s Governance Board.

Previously, Dr. Durkin was the NHS National Director of Patient Safety from 2012-2017.

He holds Visiting Professor appointments in Patient Safety at Imperial College London and the University of the West of England and is currently the Senior Advisor on Patient Safety Policy and Leadership at the Institute of Global Health Innovation at Imperial College.

He is an Associate Non-Executive Director at NHS Resolution. He qualified in Medicine at The Middlesex Hospital Medical School and has held clinical, research and teaching appointments in cardiovascular anaesthesia and critical care in London, Bristol and Yale Universities.

He started his 25 year medical management and leadership career as Executive Medical Director at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital in 1993 and held successive Executive Medical Director positions for Strategic Authorities between 2002-2012 culminating as the Medical Director of the NHS across the South of England supporting a population of 16M. He has led performance and clinical governance reviews in the UK and overseas.  He was the UK Department of Health National Clinical Director for Venous Thrombo-Embolism, an appointed Expert by the International Society for Quality in Healthcare and on the core team for the Patient Safety Campaign for England.  He led the National Patient Safety Programme for England developing the 15 Patient Safety Collaboratives across England and the Q Fellowship to build a community of 5000 quality improvers in partnership with The Health Foundation. He continues to support international development of patient safety systems with the World Health Organisation.  He convened the Berwick Advisory Board in 2013 to advise on creating conditions to improve the safety of patients in England and in 2015 he was commissioned by the Secretary of State for Health to Chair the Expert Advisory Group to advise on the establishment of the Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch.  He led the establishment of Ministerial Inter-Governmental Summits on Patient Safety which have now been held in the UK (2016) and Germany (2017), and to be held in Japan in 2018. He holds an Honorary Doctorate from the University of the West of England and in 2017 he was awarded the highest accolade of the Royal College of Physicians of London for services to Patient Safety, their Honorary Fellowship. He is Chair of the Management Board of NICE National Clinical Guideline Centre and sits on national and international research, policy and patient safety Advisory Boards.

Alicia Cole is an internationally recognized Speaker and Patient Safety Consultant. A two-time survivor of hospital-acquired MRSA, Sepsis, and Necrotizing Fasciitis, Alicia has endured nine surgeries, eleven blood transfusions, and nearly had her left leg amputated. She’s navigated her way through over a decade of weekly medical treatments and aftercare.  While still recovering, Alicia co-sponsored and successfully lobbied for passage of two California laws, one for Patient Safety education for healthcare workers, and the other, Public Reporting of hospital infection rates. (“Nile’s Law”) In between doctor appointments, Alicia earned a Post-Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Management and Leadership, from UCLA School of Public Health. Her passion is protecting patients by improving health literacy and self-efficacy, while promoting safer care as a Health Policy Change Agent. In 2015, Alicia was honored by President Barack Obama for her advocacy work and appointed to the Presidential Advisory Council for Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria (PACCARB).  She continued in that position under the Trump administration until February of 2020. Alicia’s journey from survivor to champion has been featured on ABC’s 20/20, The Doctors, The Dr. Nandi Show, CBS and Fox News, she has also been profiled in USA Today, HEALTH Magazine, Consumer Reports, HealthLeaders Media and the LA Times.
