Dr. Richard Mwase is a Ugandan anesthesiologist. He attended Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) for his undergraduate medical degree and pursued a postgraduate degree in anesthesia and critical care at the Makerere University College of Health Sciences (MUCHS).

He currently works with Uganda People’s Defense Force, Medical Services as Head of Anesthesia and Critical Care Services. His deep interest in patient safety was sparked by his firsthand experiences with near misses and death of casualties during his deployments in hostile environments.

Dr. Mwase oversaw patient safety in his capacity as Chief Anesthesiologist, in a project directed in Somalia by Smile Train. Over 2,000 children and adults were treated during the project without experiencing any near misses or catastrophes. He is a member of several professional associations. Including the Association of Anesthesiologists of Uganda (AAU), Uganda Medical Association (UMA), and College of Anesthesiologists of East Central and Southern Africa (CANECSA).
