Steven Barker is on the Governance Board of the Patient Safety Movement Foundation. A board-certified anesthesiologist who has been a tenured professor in both engineering and anesthesiology for 30 years, he has published more than 200 academic papers.

His many national roles in the field of anesthesiology include serving as President of the national organization of anesthesiology department chairs, President of the Society for Technology in Anesthesia (STA), Director for Academic Anesthesiology at the American Society of Anesthesiologists, and senior oral examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiology. In January 2016, his commitment to advancing new monitoring technologies and associated testing in the field earned him the J.S. Gravenstein Award from the STA, “for his visionary understanding of the role of technology in anesthesia care and lifetime commitment to patient safety.”

Barker is now a Professor Emeritus of Anesthesiology at the University of Arizona. He has also worked as a consultant in the medtech industry, combining his anesthesiology and engineering backgrounds to help develop new medical technologies for addressing patient safety issues. He is currently the Chief Science Officer for Masimo Corporation.
