Dr. Joseph C. Carmichael is the Chief Medical Officer & Senior Vice President at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). His career at UCI Health began in 2010 and since that time, he has served in many roles including Residency Program Director, Division Chief, Chair of the Chao Cancer Center Protocol Review and Monitoring Committee, Operating Room Director, Chair of the GI tumor board, and as a member at large of the Medical Staff.

He is board-certified in general surgery and colon and rectal surgery and specializes in laparoscopic and robot-assisted surgical approaches to treating diseases of the colon and rectum as well as complex open abdominal surgery. He is a member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS) and has served on several of their national committees. He has authored or co-authored more than 100 peer reviewed research publications and was the lead author of the first North American guidelines for enhanced recovery after surgery leading a joint writing group involving members of ASCRS and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).

Dr. Carmichael earned his medical degree at the University of Missouri School of Medicine in Columbia. He completed an internship and residency in general surgery at the UCI School of Medicine, followed by a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery in Chicago at the Cook County Hospital and University of Illinois, Chicago Medical Center.
